Two Master Suites: A Growing Trend

This week, we welcome back guest author, Nathan Roberts, owner of Roberts Construction Services.

Two master bedrooms are a growing trend with the rise of multigenerational living. As multigenerational households become more common, larger bedrooms with attached bathrooms are becoming more coveted and builders are responding by adding secondary master suites into more floor plans. We are also seeing trends in home renovation where bonus rooms are being turned into additional master or junior suites. Spacious communal spaces, such as the family room and kitchen, allow loved ones to spend plenty of time together while private bedroom suites offer plenty of privacy. As a matter of fact, my team has three projects in-the-works that all feature a second master suite.

Multigenerational living comes in many forms. For some, parents are moving in with their children in their retirement to help care for grandchildren. Added affordability compared to separate households is also a big factor. For many families, the economy has meant moving in together to afford a home - whether it's the need to care for aging parents and grandparents or adult children moving back home. In fact, according to a recent survey by the National Association of Realtors, sales of primary homes to multigenerational families grew from 12% to 15% in just the first three months of the pandemic.

First-floor master suites are growing more popular, too. Some builders are adding a dual master bedroom on the main level of the home with a separate entrance. Such spaces also allow the owners to age in place, as they can maintain their independence while having their children or grandchildren just steps away. Family members who visit for an extended period of time make secondary master suites attractive as well.
